Add remote backup destination OpenStack Object Storage SWIFT

Hugo Vaz shared this idea 1 year ago
Pre-Release

As a system administrator I would like the ability to automatically send my server and account backups to a SWIFT/OpenStack Object Storage provider.

"Swift is a highly available, distributed, eventually consistent object/blob store. Organizations can use Swift to store lots of data efficiently, safely, and cheaply." - http://docs.openstack.org/developer/swift

Swift is a very popular and reliable object storage solution, and just like AWS S3, it's API is very well documented and there already lots of opensource libraries already available to integrate with this solution. The number of providers that offer this kind of platform at very competitive prices is increasing, which makes it a very attractive backup solution.

This feature is in version 74, which is now in the EDGE tier! I recommend setting up an EDGE server (instructions on our blog) and give it some testing!

OpenStack swift is much cheaper than amazon s3 with some suppliers, and we will soon be looking into building our own Openstack swift cluster.

Hey guys i've been working with Object Storage recently while working on an internal owncloud deployment.

My quick solution was to link Owncloud to swift using its built in compatibility then to have cpanel webdav to owncloud.

The setup is working great so far. The only problem was to change the max upload default in owncloud.

Another solution that i've not tested yet is https://github.com/ncw/rclone i might have to transfer to this solution since i might start running into the 5GB limitation.

Best of luck.

Just a quick update; rclone was the only valid solution due to the 5GB Limitation; i hope home directories that are 9GB and rclone does a great job at segmenting them into parts.

While this doesn't exactly answer the request, we have made it much easier for you to build your own custom remote destination in version 66. Take a look, and give it a shot. If you write your own, send me your github link! I'd love to share it.

This feature is currently planned to be included in cPanel & WHM Version 74! Once it's out, we'll be back with an update!
